World No. 32 Raymond Indra–Nikolaus Joaquin made a powerful statement at the Australian Open in Sydney, taking down two top Malaysian pairs on their way to the title.
On Saturday, the young Indonesian duo stunned world No. 4 Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani 21-15, 21-15 in the semi-finals, just a day after edging past world No. 5 Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun 21-15, 19-21, 21-15 in the quarter-finals.
They completed their breakthrough run by beating compatriots Fajar Alfian–Muhammad Rian Ardianto in Sunday’s final to lift the Australian Open crown.
Despite their impressive form, national coach Herry IP urged caution, saying it is still too early to label them Indonesia’s next dominant force.
“Raymond–Nikolaus are a good pair, but they are still untested. It’s too soon to judge their true potential on the world stage,” he said.
“That doesn’t mean we can take them lightly. We will monitor their progress just like we do with other strong pairs.”
