Wong Choong Hann believes injuries, rather than a lack of quality, are the main reason for the inconsistent results of Malaysia’s national men’s singles shuttlers.
The former national champion said recurring injuries to key players have disrupted training programmes and affected performances on the international stage. While Lee Zii Jia has returned to the World Tour after recovering from ankle and back issues, Ng Tze Yong is only easing back into light training following ACL surgery. Leong Jun Hao has also faced frequent minor injuries that have hampered his progress.
Choong Hann stressed that a fully fit squad would be capable of producing stronger and more convincing results, adding that recovery and proper preparation must be prioritised ahead of major events such as the Asian Games. He also called for patience in developing younger players, noting that long-term planning and gradual exposure are essential.
Now serving as Hong Kong’s head coach, Choong Hann maintained that Malaysia still possess quality in men’s singles, but injuries have prevented players from performing at their best consistently.
