Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has issued a firm reminder to Malaysia’s national shuttlers, warning that talent alone will not be enough without strong discipline and proper training habits. The BAM performance committee chairman said stricter standards are necessary for both senior and junior players to progress, even if it leads to dissatisfaction among some.
Chong Wei, renowned for his own uncompromising work ethic during his playing days, revealed that discipline issues within the national setup have already been discussed with coaches, who have been instructed to enforce accountability. Players are now required to report on time, stay fully focused during training, and avoid skipping sessions, as lapses will no longer be tolerated.
He stressed that while he does not expect players to replicate his extreme routines, such as early-morning solo training, they must adopt disciplined lifestyles and maintain full commitment. Chong Wei also defended BAM’s decision to field a mix of back-up and young players at the recent Badminton Asia Team Championships, saying the focus was on exposure and long-term development, especially with Malaysia already qualified for the Thomas Cup.
According to Chong Wei, the tournament highlighted Malaysia’s improving depth in doubles, while men’s singles remains an area requiring continued work under the guidance of the coaching team.
