It was a disappointing day for Malaysia at the Denmark Open as all but one of the men’s doubles pairs were eliminated in the first round on Wednesday.
Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi joined world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 3 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani in making early exits.
Arif-Roy King fell 21-15, 21-19 to Japan’s Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, while Yew Sin-Ee Yi lost 21-19, 21-14 to France’s Popov brothers, Christo and Toma Junior. Earlier, Aaron-Wooi Yik were stunned by Indonesia’s new pairing Rian Ardianto-Rahmat Hidayat, and Sze Fei-Izzuddin were beaten by England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy in a three-game battle.
Tan Wee Kiong and Nur Azriyn Ayub are now Malaysia’s sole survivors in the men’s doubles event after defeating China’s Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han in their opening match. They will next face the reigning world champions and world No. 1 Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae for a spot in the quarter-finals.
