The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are standing firm on their decision to send the country’s strongest squad to the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand from December 9–20, emphasizing that national pride is at stake.
The line-up features some of Malaysia’s biggest names, including mixed doubles world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, and Arctic Open champions Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah.
BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh said the decision followed thorough discussions with the coaching team, who collectively agreed it was the right move to ensure Malaysia’s best chance for gold.
“The SEA Games are not just about medals — they represent the nation’s pride,” said Kenny. “This is the right opportunity for us to send our top players and deliver strong results for the country.”
The badminton events will run from December 7–14, with team events first followed by individual matches. The schedule allows Malaysia’s top pairs, who are also eyeing qualification for the World Tour Finals (WTF) in Hangzhou from December 17–21, to participate in both competitions.
Kenny confirmed that BAM have already accounted for travel logistics, with options for players to fly directly from Thailand to China for the WTF.
He also noted that Aaron-Wooi Yik, who previously suggested younger players should be given more opportunities, have agreed to represent Malaysia in Bangkok.
“After discussions, they agreed and are ready for the SEA Games,” Kenny added.
While some fans have argued the SEA Games should be used to develop rising talents, BAM maintain that fielding the best players is in the nation’s best interest.
“There are many opinions — some for, some against — but our decision comes after detailed discussions with all relevant parties, especially the coaches,” Kenny said.
BAM will finalize their medal target in the coming weeks after another round of internal meetings.
