National men’s doubles coach Herry IP has delivered a strong message ahead of the SEA Games men’s team final, expressing full confidence that Malaysia will rise to the occasion against his home country, Indonesia.
Malaysia’s last men’s team gold came in 2005, and the pressure now falls on world No. 2 Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik to deliver against Indonesia’s world No. 8 Sabar Karyaman–Moh Reza Isfahani in the opening doubles. Although Aaron–Wooi Yik were not at their best in the semi-final win over Thailand, Herry believes they will peak when it matters most. He also expects a stronger display from world No. 5 Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun.
Herry said the final will be tough but reminded his players that favourites carry the pressure, urging them to stay calm and focused.
In singles, Leong Jun Hao will look to challenge Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan, while Justin Hoh — impressive under pressure in the semi-finals — is expected to play a key role again against Zaki Ubaidullah. Singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen praised the team’s collective effort and believes they are ready for the ultimate test.
Malaysia will aim to secure victory early, as they did in previous rounds, to avoid relying on third singles Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin should the tie go the distance.
