Netizens have voiced frustration with national men’s singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen, blaming him for the ongoing struggles of Malaysia’s men’s singles squad. Some even claimed his past success was driven more by players like Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen than by his coaching ability.
However, Datuk Lee Chong Wei has stepped in to defend Jonassen, urging fans to remain patient. “In my opinion, we have to give Jonassen some time. He’s only been here for 10 months. We can’t expect him to transform the country’s badminton scene within a year,” said Chong Wei.
He added that the men’s singles’ current struggles are not caused by Jonassen’s shortcomings, but are long-standing issues that existed before the Danish coach joined BAM.
