World champions Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei received RM460,000 in incentives from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Affin Bank Berhad, and Yonex on Thursday — a timely boost before their upcoming European tour.
BAM contributed RM300,000, Yonex added RM100,000, while Affin chipped in RM60,000 to honour the pair’s historic achievement of becoming Malaysia’s first mixed doubles world champions in Paris this August.
This latest reward brings their total earnings from sponsors to RM995,000 for their world title win.
BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz stated that the association will introduce a more transparent and performance-based incentive scheme to ensure fair rewards for all players based on their contracts.
“We witnessed Tang Jie-Ee Wei make history as Malaysia’s first-ever world champions in mixed doubles, and it happened on Merdeka Day. Today’s ceremony is more than a reward — it’s recognition, gratitude, and encouragement. This also reflects BAM’s commitment to supporting our athletes and coaches towards continued global excellence,” said Tengku Zafrul.
Ee Wei, who has recovered from the muscle strain that forced their Arctic Open withdrawal, confirmed she is ready for next week’s Denmark Open, a Super 750 event. “I am fully fit and prepared. This achievement is not just ours but also belongs to BAM, the coaches, and all the support staff.”
Women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah also received RM192,500 in rewards, while mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto earned RM15,000. Six support staff who contributed to Tang Jie-Ee Wei’s preparation shared RM18,000.
