The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has instructed its two national coaching directors — men’s singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen and men’s doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky — to immediately conduct a full and in-depth investigation into Malaysia’s shock failure in the SEA Games men’s team event in Thailand.
Malaysia suffered a heavy 0–3 defeat to long-time rivals Indonesia in the men’s team final, extending the nation’s gold medal drought in this category. Malaysia has not won the SEA Games men’s team gold since the 2005 Manila Games, and this latest defeat has raised serious concerns over the national squad’s preparedness and direction.
BAM secretary-general and deputy head of Malaysia’s SEA Games contingent, Dato’ Kenny Goh, stressed that the investigation must begin without delay, especially with a major tournament looming.
The national team will compete in the 2026 Asian Badminton Team Championships in Qingdao, China, from 3–8 February, a crucial event that also serves as a benchmark ahead of the Thomas Cup cycle.
“First of all, this is a disappointing result, and we must take some significant steps,” Dato’ Kenny said after attending the Malaysian taekwondo event today.
He emphasized that both singles and doubles departments must assess what went wrong — technically, strategically, and mentally — to ensure the squad does not repeat the same shortcomings on the continental stage.
The 0–3 loss in Bangkok came despite Indonesia fielding a mixed-strength team, intensifying pressure on Malaysia’s coaching leadership. The upcoming investigation is expected to review player form, coaching strategies, match preparation, and training discipline.
More updates are expected once Jonassen and Rexy submit their internal report to BAM’s high-performance committee.
