Ng Tze Yong’s journey over the past year has been one of resilience and patience. Since 2024, the 24-year-old shuttler has only managed to play seven matches due to a persistent back injury that forced him into a long layoff. Despite the limited time on court, both the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) continue to place their faith in him as one of the cornerstones of Malaysia’s future.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh emphasized how crucial Ng will be to Malaysia’s Thomas Cup ambitions:
“If Malaysia wants to shine in the Thomas Cup, our singles must be strong. Ng Tze Yong has huge potential. We’ve given him full support, even sending him to Doha for treatment, and we hope to see him back on court early next year.”
Once touted as the natural successor to Lee Zii Jia in the men’s singles department, Ng’s career highlight so far was his silver medal run at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He has also taken down some of the world’s best — including former world champion Loh Kean Yew and India’s Lakshya Sen — proving that he has what it takes to stand among the elite.
The setback with injuries has stalled his progress, but BAM continues to monitor his recovery closely, believing that a fully fit Ng could be the difference-maker when Malaysia faces powerhouses like China, Indonesia, and Denmark in the Thomas Cup.
With Ng expected to return early next year, Malaysian fans will be eager to see if he can regain his form in time to play a pivotal role in Malaysia’s bid to reclaim Thomas Cup glory — a title last won in 1992.
