Malaysian badminton coach Wong Tat Meng has been placed in an induced coma after suffering multiple fractures in a motorcycle accident in Sydney.
The 58-year-old, who has undergone several surgeries including a major one, was airlifted to hospital following a collision involving two motorcycles along Putty Road at Garland Valley. One man was killed at the scene, while Tat Meng received emergency treatment.
Former BAM official P. Ganga Rao, based in Melbourne, confirmed that a close friend has been monitoring Tat Meng’s condition in Sydney.
“He is in an induced coma, but his condition is not life-threatening. He has been stabilised after multiple surgeries. We are praying for his well-being. He is at one of the best hospitals there,” said Ganga.
Former Malaysian shuttler Vountus Indra Mawan, now head coach of the South Australia Badminton Association, was also shocked.
“I was just planning to meet him in Perth during the National Under-13 and Under-17. I wish him a full recovery,” said Vountus.
Wong Tat Meng previously coached under the Badminton Association of Malaysia before moving abroad to guide South Korea’s An Se-young and Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia.
