Malaysian badminton singles coach Wong Tat Meng is reported to be in critical condition following a motorcycle accident in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday.
The crash involved two motorcycles, with the other rider pronounced dead at the scene. Tat Meng was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to a hospital, where he remains in intensive care, according to reports.
Former national player and coach James Selvaraj confirmed Tat Meng’s condition to NST.
Tat Meng, who previously guided Lee Zii Jia during his independent career, played a key role in helping the shuttler break back into the world’s top 10, win major titles, and claim a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The two parted ways at the end of last year.
Beyond his work with Zii Jia, Tat Meng also served as a coach for the Hong Kong and South Korean national teams, as well as two separate stints with the Badminton Association of Malaysia between 2003–2011 and 2013–2016.
