Independent shuttler Cheam June Wei has etched his name in history by winning the Lin Dan Cup men’s singles title for the third time, an achievement no other player has managed before.
The world No. 79 showed incredible resilience in the final, fighting back from a game down to stun home favourite Wu Kai’an 11-15, 15-13, 15-9 in Jincheng, China today.
Earlier, June Wei battled past China’s Zhou Zeqi in the semi-finals, while fellow Malaysian Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin was stopped by Wu in the other last-four clash.
The 28-year-old walked away with 200,000 yuan (RM118,000) in prize money and expressed his delight on Instagram, saying: “Third time, hopefully more to come.”
June Wei’s remarkable run in the tournament continues after he captured the Lin Dan Cup Shenzhen leg title in June last year, which earned him 200,000 yuan, and followed it up with victory in the Macau leg in September, where he pocketed 300,000 yuan.
